WOLFGANG PAUL is the powerhouse drummer behind Suburban legends ARRA.
We got a chance to chat with Wolfgang:
What is your current rig setup?
I tour with my 7 piece, maple PDP drum set! The rack toms, floor toms, and bass drum are all topped with Evans drumheads. For my snare, I use my Yamaha Custom Recording snare, it is 6.5" x 14", and I top that with a Remo Ambassador drumhead. For cymbals, I am proud to say I am an artist for Turkish Cymbals, so I have 14" Hi-Hats, 17', 18' and 19' Crash cymbals, a 18" China, and a 22" Ride.
What is your favorite part of your kit?
Definitely my DW 9000 single bass pedal! Since Bonham was such a huge influence on me, I grew up learning how to do everything with one pedal. With my DW 9000, it makes my playing feel so effortless and smooth. It allows me to groove and really get into the music.
What is your Scorpion Signature Model, and what do you love about it?
I play the 5A | Oval | 16" | Natural Immortal Series Sticks! I chose these sticks because the very first time I played with these sticks, I knew I had found a balance, tenacity, and power like never before. They respond to every dynamic, every strike, and every groove with precision and reliability. Whether in the studio or on stage, these sticks feel like an extension of my hands—effortless, powerful, and built to perform.
Who were some of your early influences?
My early influences were Neil Peart, John Bonham and Leonard Hayes. Neil Peart to this day remains my biggest drum influence and is my hero. Bonham is very close second though. Those two defined my drumming style and I am always in awe when I listen to their work.
When was your first show?
My first show was at a venue called The Broken Oar in Illinois. I got to play with my Dad and his best friends in their band Valkyr. It was 2010, I was 5 years old, and it was during the summer before my kindergarten year.
What is your favorite thing about the local scene?
My favorite thing about my local scene is the sense of community. Everyone in this scene, musicians and supporters alike, are all family here. I’ve witnessed various benefits and events dedicated to different musicians or supporters here who were battling financial problems and health scares and the events were massive successes. The best interest of others is always the priority in this scene. It is truly beautiful.
If you could play in any band, which would you choose?
Rush! But as for an actively touring band, I'd love to perform with FireHouse, Warrant or Stryper.
What have you been working on musically?
I have been working on recording and tracking my drums. I just purchased an X32 Behringer Rack and have been working hard to master Pro Tools. I want to create engaging content and be able to share my passion on a larger scale through social media.
What is your favorite part of being a musician?
My favorite part of being a musician is being able to share my passion and love for music with as many people as I can. It has always been a dream of mine to tour all around the world and meet as many people as possible. I love music so much, and to make people dance and sing makes me even happier when I am on stage!
