Yayo the Drummer is a professional touring drummer and creative collaborator whose playing is defined by precision, power, and unmistakable feel. Known for his dynamic performance style and commanding presence behind the kit, Yayo has earned a reputation as a drummer who doesn’t just keep time—he shapes the entire musical moment.
That presence is what inspired hip-hop icon Lil Wayne to give him the nickname “The One Man Band,” a nod to Yayo’s ability to control the stage with intention, confidence, and musical clarity.

From Jackson, Mississippi to the World
Raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Yayo’s musical roots run deep. His earliest exposure to music came through the church, where rhythm, emotion, and spirit intersected in powerful ways.
“I was introduced to music at a young age in church through my parents. My brother, Mike, started me on guitar before moving to piano and organ. Drums is where I found my true connection, developing my foundation in church and eventually making it my primary instrument.”
That gospel foundation—combined with the influence of hip-hop culture—shaped Yayo’s sense of feel, groove, and musical storytelling. Those early experiences continue to inform the calm yet dramatic stretches of his playing today.
Connecting at NAMM 2026
Earlier this year, Yayo officially joined the Scorpion Family and stopped by the NAMM Show in Anaheim, where we had the chance to catch up with him and talk music, mindset, and life on the road.

Gear Built for the Real World
Consistency is a cornerstone of Yayo’s approach—both musically and technically. His setup is designed for reliability and performance under real-world touring conditions. Yayo’s preferred rig includes Heartbeat Cymbals, a DW drum set, and his ONE MAN BAND custom snare side pack.
When it comes to sticks, he plays the Scorpion Percussion 7AX – Yayo Signature model, finished with the unmistakable Yayo Yellow Dip for enhanced grip and control—no surprise for a drummer whose style demands precision night after night.
How Music Shaped His Perspective
When asked how music has changed him as a person, Yayo’s answer reflects his intentional approach to both art and life.
“Music changed me when I realized that what you feed your spirit matters. What you choose to listen to ultimately shapes how you think, create, and move through life. Because of that, I’m intentional about listening to music that feeds the most positive aspects of my life, my spirit, and my future.”

Influences That Still Guide His Sound
Yayo’s earliest influences came straight from the church, including artists like The Clark Sisters, Commissioned, and the Mississippi Mass Choir.
“That authentic church sound and those melodies helped shape my sense of feel and musicality. Those influences still guide the calm but dramatic stretches in my playing and producing, helping everything make sense when I create."
Life in Dallas and the Modern Music Scene
Now based in Dallas, Texas, Yayo embraces the city’s constantly moving music culture.
“There’s live music happening somewhere every day of the week. The city offers constant opportunities to grow, collaborate, and stay inspired.”
At the same time, he acknowledges the challenges of a saturated scene.
“The oversaturation can make it challenging for artists to truly connect and stand out, but it also pushes you to sharpen your craft and show up prepared every time.”

The Heart of the Kit
For Yayo, everything starts with the snare.
“The snare is the voice of the drummer—it controls the conversation, the feel, and the emotion of the music. If the snare feels right, everything falls into place.”
He relies on Remo drumheads on his snare for tone and response, paired with Evans drumheads on his toms for consistency and control across the kit.
Challenges, Growth, and Balance
Touring at a high level isn’t without its demands. Yayo points to balance as one of the biggest challenges he’s faced as a musician.
“Touring requires discipline, focus, and mental strength. I overcame that by staying rooted in purpose, remaining intentional with my time, and continuing to grow both musically and personally.”
What He’s Working On Now
Creatively, Yayo is focused on his instrumental project STILL ON TOUR, Vol. 1. He recently released his first single, “3595 S. Las Vegas Blvd,” featuring DJ Franzen—a title that pays homage to Club Drai’s, where Yayo has held a residency for the past seven years.
“The music reflects movement, growth, and consistency. It captures what life on the road feels like—the discipline, the moments in between shows, and the environments that shape creativity.”

The Joy of Being a Musician
At the core of it all, Yayo’s passion comes down to connection.
“My favorite part about being a musician is the ability to move people without saying a word. Creating moments that shift energy, connect spirits, and live beyond performance is something I never take for granted.”
