From Jackson, Mississippi to the World

Raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Yayo’s musical roots run deep. His earliest exposure to music came through the church, where rhythm, emotion, and spirit intersected in powerful ways.

“I was introduced to music at a young age in church through my parents. My brother, Mike, started me on guitar before moving to piano and organ. Drums is where I found my true connection, developing my foundation in church and eventually making it my primary instrument.”

That gospel foundation—combined with the influence of hip-hop culture—shaped Yayo’s sense of feel, groove, and musical storytelling. Those early experiences continue to inform the calm yet dramatic stretches of his playing today.
