Music runs in Cody Hanson’s family. The Hinder co- founder and deft drummer was born in Plano, Texas, but grew up in the small town of Jones, Oklahoma. His grandfathers were both musicians: one played bluegrass in South Dakota and would visit with guitars for family gatherings, where they’d write playful songs together. Hanson’s early exposure to music came from these sessions, but his fascination with drums began at local shows, where he’d watch the drummers intently. At 12, he got his first drum set and taught himself to play. When Hanson met lead guitarist Joe “Blower” Garvey in college, things got serious. Their partnership reignited Hanson’s passion for drums and led to the formation of Hinder. Hanson’s dedication helped him grow as an artist as the band gained momentum and began to blow up. Hanson’s eclectic musical tastes are reflected in Hinder’s dynamic sound. He says he always wants listening to an album to be like the ride on a roller-coaster. Influenced by his older self siblings, he was exposed to NWA and 2 Live Crew at an early age, while his father’s love for classic country added an old-school dimension to his repertoire. “It’s all about the hooks, ” Hanson says—but it’s also all about the story. Hanson is drawn to music whose lyrics resonate: the narrative of Bad Company’s “Shooting Star” led him to Metallica and Third Eye Blind. Strong hooks and captivating stories are the guiding forces in his songwriting for Hinder. Beyond music, Hanson is passionate about animal welfare. Committed to the welfare of all creatures, his ultimate goal is to open a rescue shelter.
