]]>Jason Mehler or MODERN DRUMMER MAGAZINE has given his honest review of Scorpion Percussion Drumsticks. Whether you're new to Scorpion, or just seeking confirmation on the quality of our product, Jason had some great insights to share.
Though the company has been around since 2008, Scorpion Percussion has really made waves in the past few years. Maybe it’s the cool factor. The drumsticks with the green grip and the menacing scorpion logo keep popping up on-stage with some of today’s top rockers. These sticks have a vibe, and for this month’s product close-up, I’ll be checking out an assortment of Scorpion Percussion drumsticks to see if they live up to the hype.
What are we testing?
I received seven pairs of Scorpion hickory drumsticks to review. Each pair has a different length, diameter, finish, and tip. Six of the pairs are from their Immortal Series, they are: 5A sixteen inch with oval tip and lacquer finish, 5AX seventeen inch with oval tip and lacquer finish, 5A sixteen inch with oval tip and natural finish, 7A sixteen inch with ball tip and lacquer finish, 5B sixteen inch with oval tip and natural finish, and 2B sixteen inch with Acorn tip and Venom Grip finish. The other pair is a set of warm-up rods that they call the Emperor Warm Up 747. They are dipped in Venom Grip as well.
What is Venom Grip?
Venom Grip is a thin, colorized (neon green) coating of water- based synthetic rubber, designed to reduce slippage while relaxing the drummer’s grip for a more natural feel.
Drumstick lengths and diameters are largely a matter of preference, so for this review I will focus on the quality and finish of the Scorpion products as a whole, rather than review each pair of sticks individually.
Quality
Every pair of Scorpion sticks that I received have the following consistent characteristics: The sticks are tone-matched perfectly. The wood grain runs straight from bottom to top with few potential weak points. The sticks roll on a flat surface without any wobble whatsoever. The tip shapes are uniform within each pair and do not vary in rebound or sound as the stick rotates.
Lacquer Finish
Scorpion’s lacquer finish is subtle, meaning it’s not super shiny or thick. The sticks feel comfortable to hold and you can still detect the wood texture under your fingertips, which gives a sense of confidence that the stick will not slide.
Natural Finish
The sanded natural finish on the Scorpion sticks is nice. Where other brands natural finish is almost polished, these feel raw, like they just came off the sander. They almost feel like there is saw dust still in-tack, although that’s not the case. I’m sure under a microscope these would look interesting. Like Scorpion’s lacquer finish, the natural finish has anti-slip characteristics.
Venom Grip Finish
I love the Venom Grip. Aside from the look, it is very functional. The rubberized coating is thin to the point where you can clearly read the printed writing underneath it, yet it is very effective. There is no peeling or cracking, even at the transition where the grip tapers off. The coating has minimal effect on the weight distribution of the stick, and the sticks roll on a flat surface as if there is no coating present.
As for feel, the Venom Grip has just enough of a rubber “give” to feel snug on your grip, without a sense of stickiness. The anti-slip properties of the coating can be clearly detected by sliding your grip from the untreated top of the stick to the holding position where the coating will catch and halt the slide. The grip performs even better when damp or wet, which is exactly what you would want for demanding environments such as a hot stage or venue.
Emperor Warm Up 747
The one pair of sticks that warranted their own review section are the 747s. They are basically a pair of dense, thick hickory dowels dipped in Venom grip. They are 16-inches long with no frills, other than the ever-present Scorpion logo.
I hadn’t thought of using something like the 747s to warm up, although I do occasionally use a set of marching sticks. The problem with marching sticks for warming up (at least for me) is that they have the tendency to coax you out of the monotony of doing the simple and necessary warm up routines to get blood flowing to the hands. They are like the gateway drug to the more “choppy” stuff that does nothing for your muscles. These
747s on the other hand, have one obvious job: Warm Up! I will be using these for this purpose going forward.
A Third Person View
I recently had the privilege of watching Mikey Cox, drummer for Coal Chamber, in the most intense drumming performance that I’ve ever witnessed from stage left. Drenched in sweat and armed with his Scorpion signature 3A, green Venom-dipped drumsticks, Mikey annihilated the drums in a way that would send the Muppets’“Animal” into retirement. There is no better durability test for a pair of drumsticks than being in Mikey’s hands for one song. Did he break the sticks? Yes! Several pairs during the show. But he’d probably break them if they were made of titanium. Those green sticks took a wicked beating and were the perfect companion to the chaos that is Mikey Cox. He gave me the surviving pair of his sticks after the show, which now sit in my collection.

He spent a great deal of time doing his due diligence and putting this video together. Thanks for Becoming Immortal, Al!
From Al:
Hi! I’m Al, a 50-year-old working drummer based in central Washington state. I’ve been playing drums just over 35 years. I started a YouTube channel in 2023 to share some of those lessons with you.
This is an #unsponsored review, #notanad - I got a few pairs of Scorpion Percussion drumsticks and put them through a week of playing. Do they live up to the hype? What's with all the options? How does the Venom Grip feel?

]]>Forever May Fall is a four-piece rock band from Charlotte, North Carolina founded in 2017 by vocalist & songwriter Jillyan “Fox” Brennan. Born of transplants to the Charlotte, NC area, the band is composed of Jillyan "Fox" Brennan, hailing from Long Island, NY, Colt Crevar and Patrick "Sweez" Swesey representing Pennsylvania, (Eerie & Philly respectively), and Adam "Crabby" Crabtree representing Oklahoma. With one album down, a lineup change, and a global pandemic abruptly halting momentum, the band has come back swinging with their hiatus breaking single “Aftermath” released in February of 2022. Rebranding and blending the sounds of influences such as Evanescence, Halestorm, Bad Omens, Spiritbox, Underoath, and many more, Forever May Fall hopes to break the molds of any one genre. Working with producers such as Joshua Landry (LØ Spirit, Motionless in White, Funeral Portrait), Kile Odell, (Nita Strauss, Motionless in White, Fozzy) and Wes Lauterbach (Lowborn) has made that possible. “No two songs sound exactly alike. We have our sound on it for sure, but everyone we’ve been blessed to work with has added their own bit of finesse to each track. To me, that makes each release more exciting,” says Jillyan. “This is our rebirth” – a word that has stuck with guitarist & songwriter, Colt Crevar since his addition to the band in late 2020. “Rebirth, rebranding, we’re getting back out there and we’re doing it in a big way.”

As the temperatures start to drop, the rock scene is heating up with Gemini Syndrome, Wednesday 13, Infected Rain, and Black Satellite. Being a great example of pain producing a heavily emotional sound, Ghost In Stereo’s melodic metalcore track “Corrosion” offers a powerful glimpse into the mind of a man who was once taken over by addiction. The lyrics reflect on drug addiction and how it can be influenced by the ones that are supposed to love us the most. Mastered by Dave Otero of Flatline Audio and recorded at Francisco Studios.
Many Scorpion Percussion sticks were harmed during the production of Corrosion and all previous singles that Ghost In Stereo have released to date. The audio release date of 10/24/2023, for Corrosion, includes a very special official lyric video and a few weeks later, will come the release the official music video. All photo/video produced by Deadlit Studios.
Scars Remain is a Hard Rock band from Charlotte, NC. Even with plenty of experience under their belts, they still play with the same energy as when they first got together, continuously solidifying their foothold in the North Carolina scene.
Scars Remain was formed in 2017 by Travis Keziah (Vocals) and Kyle Spidel (Guitar), remnants of previous projects that had dissolved. The chemistry was immediate and was followed by the addition of Andy Allen (Bass) to hold down the low end who had been in projects with Kyle prior. Fast forward to the latest additions of Neil Jackson (Guitar/Vocals) and Jim Clardy (Drums), Scars Remain is on the fast track to notoriety in their own right. The combination of Travis and Neil with soaring vocal harmonies, Kyle, Andy, and Neil with bone-crushing riffs, and Jim holding down the skins is one to pay attention to. The energy and emotion this group gives on stage really engages the audience and more so, you can feel a connection between them and their audience.
As an independent band, they have released some successful singles working with Pangea Productions, and also acting as their own production, While playing with a plethora of national acts such as Silvertung, Saving Abel, The Veer Union, Puddle of Mudd, and Doyle, they have also appeared on numerous festivals including Operation Rock Fest, Carolina Uprising, and Metal Fest.
Hailing from the darkest, dankest depths of Portland Oregon's fecund metal scene, These Cursed Hands produce a synthesis of the best elements of black, progressive, core, death, and thrash metal that reduces even the most experienced metal listener into a quivering mass of bodily fluids slowly leeching out into the ground. Their vocal aggression, earthshaking heaviness, explosive rhythm, and face-melting riffage regularly annihilates whole audiences, leaving only ashen smears where fans once stood. As the sun rises on these scenes of sonic devastation, the few remaining survivors will pull themselves from the rubble and spread the cursed word.

]]>By Mark Griffith - MODERN DRUMMER - August, 2023
The prog-metal band QUOR has been together since 2013, and their newest member is drummer Danny Schreiber. The band just got back from a Japanese tour which found them playing at the Osaka club called Hokage’, as well as Babel Rock Tower and Zirco in Tokyo. Hokage’ is owned by trash-percussionist Isariyo Atsushi also known as “Sano San,” who also played on QUOR’s new single “Sam Meets Sara,” which can be streamed on Spotify. Chris Baseford (Methods of Mayhem and Nickelback) is producing the band, and QUOR’s full length record will be released soon. Schreiber, from Olympia WA, is also a visual and a tattoo artist operating out of his studio called The Copper Wolf.
MD: How long have you been playing?
DS: I’ve been playing 30 years, since I was 12. I started out playing in the school band and I got into playing percussion. Then I picked it up the drums pretty naturally. I was obsessed with the drums early on, I was playing nonstop, and I started gigging when I was 13. I ended up getting a Roland endorsement when I was 17 because I was playing and creating tracks with a hip hop group.
Around that time, I did some tracks for Chaz Hayes Management (Spice 1, E-40). In the early 2000s I was in a band called Pome that got signed to Atlantic Records under Velvet Hammer music management, we thought that things were going to explode until they didn’t. That knocked me back a bit and I got involved in Visual Art and Tattoos.
I played in lots of bands and had started losing faith in the whole music industry when Brian (the singer from QUOR) called. They were in the middle of recording an album and they had lost their drummer. They asked if I could record some tracks and I did, and they loved what I did on that track. A couple months later they were shooting the video and asked if I wanted to be in the video. That was for the song “Twiddle in the Middle” which did pretty well online and streaming. After that, I joined the band and we’ve been going for it ever since.
MD: What and who are your influences? Where are you coming from drum-wise?
DS: I think I have a pretty eclectic musical background. I play guitar and I sang in a band after Pome broke down. Dave Buckner (the drummer from Papa Roach) played with me for a bit in that band, so my rhythmic sense comes from a lot of different places. As far as drummers go Matt Garstka is at the top of the heap, Anika Niles drumming is fantastic. On the other hand, I love Matt Cameron, Abe Cunningham, and Danny Carey. Those guys are the heavyweights!
MD: Did the visual arts start before or after music?
DS: After. I didn’t even know I could do anything in the visual arts, I was always a musician. For a while the music business was certain, and then it became a lot less certain. I was always interested and appreciative of the visual arts, but I didn’t think I could do it. Then I tried it and found that I love creating visual art as well as drumming. It obviously goes with the culture of the music, I went back to school for visual arts, I started practicing, and in 2015 I opened up the tattoo studio and fine art gallery. It’s really taken off.
MD: Who are some of your art influences?
DS: I love Caravaggio, Van Gogh, as far as like more modern painters, I love Lavely Miller and Nicolas Uribe. Roberto Ferri is a modern master. There is a really cool tattoo artist out of France whose name is Thomas Carli Jarlier, he is just fantastic. One of the cool things about the Internet is that now you’re exposed to so many awesome people doing awesome stuff.
MD: What kind of a what kind of gear are you playing?
DS: I play Tama Starclassic Maple drums, Meinl Cymbals, and I have a Black Panther Copper snare that I love, it sounds great.
MD: You have really fast feet, what kind of pedals are you using?
DS: That’s an interesting question. I have always played Iron Cobra’s; they are my go to. But I just got the DW Direct Drive pedals, and I really want to love them. Direct Drive is a specific feel, and it takes a while to get used to that. With QUOR, I do a lot of fast double bass stuff, but there’s also a lot of slower grooves that needs to happen. I’m finding that the direct drives are great if I just want to burn through some double bass tunes, but I’m finding it a little hard to find that balance between having the speed and the balance for the groove stuff. I’m gonna keep working with the direct drive for a bit and see what happens.
MD: What kind of sticks are you using?
DS: I’ve been using Scorpion Percussion sticks for a while, they are a fantastic company, and the sticks are great. They are the longest lasting sticks I’ve used in 30 years.
MD: What ones are you using?
DS: I use the natural and I was playing the 7A’s, but their sticks are just a little weightier than normal Pro Mark or Vic Firth. I felt like I could use the 7A because it had the weight of a 5A, and then I moved up to a 5A. I’ve used the same pair of sticks for two weeks and they don’t even start to fray. I used a pair of 5A’s for a bunch of stuff and I developed a love for the 5A’s. I’m a rimshot player and typically Pro Mark sticks will last a couple practice sessions before they’re gone, but the Scorpion’s last 10 times longer.
MD: Do you use their grip?
DS: No, I haven’t tried it yet.
MD: I have to say, when you mentioned 5A sticks I was going to say that based on your music, 5A sounded a little small. But 7A? Wow that’s thin!
DS: They’re a medium taper stick. I used to play a long more pronounced tapered 5A stick from Pro Mark. But the feel of the Scorpion 7A’s felt more solid. When I first tried the Scorpion 5A’s they felt a little heavy for me, but now I love them. The ball tip gives you a really pronounced ping and bell sound too.
MD: Your band is a unique combination of faster metal and groove stuff, how would you describe QUOR’s music?
DS: QUOR is a big sounding three-piece band that is very drum and rhythm-driven. Sonically and melodically our songs are similar to what you would hear from Mastodon. There’s definitely melody, our singer’s vocal lines have a great sense of phrasing. I think we’re much more accessible than a lot of stuff out today though. We’re excited to watch it grow and see where it goes.

Snacks at Midnight isn't leftover bang bang beef or Special K. They also happen to be a talented group of young gentlemen from Spokane, WA who thought it to be a perfect band name. I have to agree. I also am a bit biased, because the weirder the band name the better in my humble and august opinion. One time, QUOR was playing a show in Nara, Japan at Live House Neverland and we got to share the stage with a band called FROGS. Great band! Of course FROGS and every other band that night was amazing not to mention the other 30 Japanese bands we had shared stages with on the 2019 QUOR Returns to Nippon tour. Snacks at Midnight.
Regardless if you're into Metal, Deathcore, Math Rock, Djent, or whatever weird sonics you enjoy bouncing off of your Timpanic Membranes, one must appreciate good musicianship and skill when it occurs. Especially! If one truly refers to themselves as an artist. Band names, foreign tours, house parties or pandemic live streams, when you can play, you can play; and nothing else matters.
Snacks at Midnight plays indie rock with a touch of blues, soul, a pinch of jazz and some stuff you just may have not heard of yet. Yeah, I said it. They have a great range stylistically when it comes to song composition. Instrumentally a 5-piece including lots of stand up bass, and keys. Who doesn't like all of that blended with some solid drums, a melodic guitar and some skillfully placed vocals? I do. I don't care what genre it is. I just want to hear the story of that artist through their music. Blood and guts on the fuckin dance floor. Slain open like a 12-point buck in Washington State.
These young men are on to something awesome. Whatever it is, it's theirs; if they can keep it. If they can all make music their life, together, through life, the ups, the downs, fat, thin, busy and bored. College, families, girlfriends, jobs and all the other great things life has to offer. For is it good music that makes life, or life that makes good music? The balance of the tide from life to music is what sails great ships and also can destroy them like the Kraken.
Check this band out, give them a follow on Spotify and Facebook. Maybe share a couple of songs around and do your part to make this world and music business a little bit better. Support each other.
I'd like to highlight the song "Westward Bound". A bit gritty and heavier for Snacks At Midnight but has a great vibe, dark, bluesy, and groovey. Just like I it. They have some other softer material that would make mom proud. Oh, did I say that's the name of the record they just released? Mom's Proud is a 10 song snack pack of some home made songs by home made sons who want to show the world their craft.
Enjoy and don't forget to support each other or Santa isn't bringing you nothin.
Love,
Smitty
